APRM CommunicationsPosted: July 21, 2017

Dar Es Salaam, 19 July 2017 - Her Excellency Samia Suluhu Hassan, the Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania officially launched the APRM Country Review Report for Tanzania in a ceremony that was attended by many Ministers, Ambassadors, Development Partners, Members of the APRM National Governing Council, civil society and members of the media.

The Chairperson of the APRM National Governing Council Prof Hassa Mlawa explained that the APRM Review Report was a result of a rigorous consultative and inclusive process which involved Tanzanians from all walks of life that culminated in a national country self-assessment report on the state of governance. This was then followed by the validation of an external team of African experts that visited the country and met all key stakeholders in 2012. The Report was thereafter subjected to peer review by the APRM Forum of Heads of State and Government in January 2013, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The Report commended Tanzania for progress in the areas of democracy, maintaining the rule of law and political stability that is a model for the continent. It also identified some governance challenges in Tanzania.

The Lead Panelist Honorable Brigitte Silvia Mabandla applauded the government for publicly launching the Tanzania CRR, of 2013 which symbolizes the commitment of the government to implementing the recommendations contained in the National Plan of Action. She noted that the government is expected to integrate the NPOA into existing national development programs. She also hoped that Tanzania would present annual progress reports to the APRM Forum.

While launching the Report, the Vice President, H.E Samia Suluhu Hassan, assured government commitment towards improving good governance in line with the recommendations of the Report. She said that implementation started immediately after the peer review in 2013 and that so far out of 92 recommendations made 25 have already been addressed or are being implemented. She further intimated that Tanzania would be ready to present its progress report to the Forum of Heads of State in January 2018 in line with APRM procedures.
