AFROBAROMETER-APRM PARTNERSHIP AIMS TO STRENGTHEN GOVERNANCE, DEVELOPMENT IN AFRICA

PUBLISHED BY: APRMPOSTED: 13-02-2020

Afrobarometer and the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) have signed a partnership agreement designed to strengthen technical capacities and collaboration in support of good governance and inclusive development in Africa.

A memorandum of agreement signed on the sidelines of the African Union (AU) Summit in Addis Ababa provides a framework for linking Afrobarometer’s research expertise and data on citizen attitudes to the APRM mandate of promoting good governance and monitoring progress toward AU Agenda 2063 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

“This agreement enables Afrobarometer to share with the APRM its rich source of data on the experiences, evaluations, and perspectives of ordinary citizens on economic, social, and political conditions in their respective countries,” said E. Gyimah-Boadi, acting chief executive officer of Afrobarometer.

“With the APRM, we endeavour to have the voice of the ordinary African count in the design, implementation, and review of the African Union’s programs and policies.”

African Peer Review Mechanism

The APRM grew out of a vision by African leaders to create a platform promoting good governance and sustainable, inclusive development throughout the continent by providing an opportunity for various communities to participate and engage with their national governance agendas. The APRM pursues this goal through a country review process that enables AU member states to express their views on the state of governance in their countries. The outcomes of the review guide the development and implementation of National Programmes of Action. In addition, the APRM has been tasked by the AU with an expanded mandate to track the governance aspects of Agenda 2063 and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Afrobarometer surveys

Afrobarometer is a pan-African, nonpartisan survey research network that provides reliable data on Africans’ experiences and evaluations of quality of life, governance, and democracy. After seven rounds of surveys in up to 38 countries between 1999 and 2018, Round 8 surveys are currently underway. Afrobarometer conducts face-to-face interviews in the language of the respondent’s choice with nationally representative samples.
