APRM 2nd Generation Review Gaining Momentum in Nigeria

Abuja, Nigeria, 27-28 February 2020 – The APRM held a Sensitization mission in collaboration with the Nigerian National Governing Council and the APRM National Secretariat in a bid to sensitize and build capacity of Nigeria’s Resource Persons and Technical Team ahead of the Second-Generation Review scheduled for later this year. The event drew participants from Nigeria Structures, Experts from the Continental Secretariat, Uganda, Kenya Egypt, Mozambique, Chad, Zambia National Structures to discuss and share experiences for the conduct of the second Review.

The APRM delegation was led by Amb Omar Mona Attia, the Lead Panelist for Nigeria who was accompanied by the CEO, Prof. Eddy Maloka, Chief of Staff, Mr. Ferdinand Katendeko, Ms. Virginia Mudhokwani and Ms. Tsakane Mahlaule.

The delegation paid a Courtesy call on the President of the Republic of Nigeria, H.E. Muhammadu Buhari on the first day of the event. In her speech at the State House, the Lead Panelist, Amb. Mona Attia outlined how well Nigeria had implemented the National Plan of Action and the recommendations of the Panel, a sign that the country is ready to undergo a second review. She further requested the President to support the second review to which H.E. Buhari pledged to support the second-generation review.  The CEO, Prof. Eddy Maloka also called on the stakeholders and participants to rally behind Nigeria in support of the second review.

Speaking at the event, Hon. Princess Gloria Akobundu, NC/CEO APRM Nigeria outlined how the ongoing 2nd Nigeria Peer Review Process will consider the impact of domestic policies, not only on internal political stability and economic growth, but also in promoting mutual accountability, as well as compliance with best practice while the process must be technically competent, credible and free of political manipulation at every step of its envisaged five stages.

The event was also graced by Ambassadors, National Governing Council (NGC), Civil Society, Media and Security Agencies who all participated in the discussions during the two-day event.

The Republic of Nigeria will add to the list of Kenya, Uganda and Mozambique who have already undergone the second-generation reviews and will be the first Member State in West Africa to be reviewed for the second time.  Nigeria acceded to the APRM in 2003 and was first Peer Reviewed in 2008. For the past 8 years, Nigeria has implemented the National Programme of Action NPoA, following the delivery of the Base Review.

Nigeria is ready to host the country’s 2nd Review Mission in October 2020 which will eventually be reviewed during the January/February 2021 AU Summit.
