Maputo, 20 November 2018 – His Excellency Filipe NYUSI, Head of State of the Republic of Mozambique, received in audience a delegation from the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM), led by Ambassador Mona Omar Attia Mohammed, Member of the APR Panel of Eminent Persons and Lead Panellist in charge of Mozambique, who was accompanied by Dr. Adriano Maleiane, Minister of Economy and Finance and APRM Focal Point for Mozambique, Dr. Momade Saide, Executive Director at the national Secretariat, the Deputy Chairperson of the NGC, Mrs Virgínia Videira and Mr. Valery Yao, Researcher at the APRM Continental Secretariat.
In his opening remarks, H.E. President Filipe NYUSI welcomed the delegation and expressed his gratitude to APRM for outstanding work done in promoting good governance on the continent. Appreciation was also expressed for the support of APRM, especially for undertaking the country’s second-generation review.
During the cordial exchanges, the Lead Panel Member briefed the President on the country review mission and emphasised that peace building is one of the major issues that emerged from wider consultations with the stakeholders and which deserves immediate attention. The President acknowledged the need for peace and assured the delegation of his personal commitment to address the issue. Notable efforts are underway in building a new peace framework due to the limited outcome of the General Peace Agreement. Particular attention will therefore be devoted to key drivers of peace, namely decentralization, demobilization and more importantly, to design special programmes for integration. He also regretted the death of Afonso Marceta Macacho Dhlakama, the former Leader of the Mozambican National Resistance (RENAMO), the main opposition party, which affected the peace building process.
Finally, H.E. President Filipe NYUSI expressed his confidence in the mechanism, through the findings and recommendations emanating from the current Country Review Report, to the path of recovery towards the social, political and economic stabilisation of the country.
